eCommerce may be the focus of your web presence, or a secondary purpose that include with your site's development or add to an existing site. In either case, ecommerce adds complexity and a number of additional elements that require attention that an informational or "brochureware" type site do not.

Identity Developments can provide you with a complete ecommerce solution, just like we can provide you with a complete web presence solution. If you are only offering a handful of products, expect a small number of sales, or your needs for features are minimal, you may be able to proceed without a full ecommerce package. Rather than a full fledged shopping cart, SSL certificate, and merchant account, there may be simpler and less expensive alternatives. We can of course help in evaluating the alternatives with you.

Merchant Accounts

If you will be accepting payments you will either need to use a third party processor (e.g., PayPal, 2Checkout, etc.) or have your own merchant account. A merchant account, along with your gateway access, may enable you to accept credit cards, debit cards, as well as checks and e-checks. While primarily offered to our clients for their web presence, Identity Developments is also able to provide merchant accounts for traditional brick-and-mortar retail as well as mobile retailers. Shopping Cart

Full ecommerce sites will benefit from an online shopping cart script. This is a pre-developed package that provides many of the typical ecommerce features. Most businesses can easily utilize this approach to speed up site development as well as avoid the much greater costs of developing a system from the ground up. Identity Developments uses a shopping cart package that can serve as a standalone site or be integrated into your existing site without sacrificing the look and feel of an existing website.

SSL Certificates

Even with a full ecommerce solution, there are a couple options for processing transactions that may determine whether or not an SSL certificate is needed. Many payment processors provide the ability to handle the checkout process, where the customer enters their personal and credit card or bank account information, on their secure site, often returning them to your site upon completion. This generally eliminates the need for you to provide secure (https) access and the need for an SSL certificate.

Accepting payment on your own site, while secure access and an SSL certificate are also not required, it is highly recommended and most people will probably not purchase from your site without this. There are different levels of SSL certificates that Identity Developments can assist you with.

Dedicated IP Addresses

IP addresses are the numerical references that all computers connected to the Internet are referenced by. These numbers are harder to remember for humans and several websites may be located at a particular IP, in other words, a shared IP. If you will be accepting payments on-site and installing a SSL certificate, then it is recommended to also use a dedicated IP address for your site, which means that no other websites will use this IP. Whether you are hosting your site through Identity Developments or elsewhere, for an additional small expense, you should be able to get a dedicated IP if your hosting doesn't already provide one.
